The Howard League for Penal Reform and the Association of Prison Lawyers is pleased to invite you to a roundtable discussion on isolation, segregation and deep custody (close supervision centres and separation units).
The focus of the discussions is expected to be broad, based on the experience of those present, but will include updates and discussion on:
- Recent developments in the law on isolation, segregation and solitary confinement and how to best support clients in and at risk of isolation in prison;
- How the landscape of segregation has changed since the Supreme Court’s decision in Bourgass and Hussain v Secretary of State for Justice [2015] UKSC 54 and whether the procedural safeguards following that decision are sufficient or effective; and
- The impact of legal aid provision for Close Supervision Centres and separation centres (from 21 February 2018) and exceptional case funding for segregation following the successful judicial review brought by the Howard League and the Prisoners’ Advice Service.
The aim of the seminar is to share ideas and legal knowledge. All attendees are warmly invited to participate in the discussion.
