Have Your Say about the Latest Proposals to Cut Legal Aid for Prison Law Work
Yet another government consultation, due to close on 4 June 2013, concerning further cuts to funding for Prison Law, associated Public Law Work and Judicial Review.
The proposals in the consultation could have a devastating impact on access to justice for Prisoners and Prison Law practices.
The Association of Prison Lawyers in conjunction with Garden Court North Chambers are organising a meeting to discuss a response to the consultation.

- Andrew Sperling, Solicitor-Advocate and Campaign Co-ordinator for the APL’s response to the consultation
- Laura Janes, APL & Howard League representative and solicitor working with vulnerable young people
- Carl Buckley, Solicitor and Legal Aid Lead for the APL
- Rachel Chapman, Prison Law Consultant, Legal Representative for Women Prisoners and Female Prisoners Lead for the APL (to be confirmed)
- Pete Weatherby QC, barrister, Garden Court North practising in human rights, public, prison, inquest and criminal law.
Topics to be covered:
- The impact of the proposals on prisoners’ access to legal services
- The national campaign – up to date information about what others are doing
- Sharing ideas on how to respond to the consultation
- Seeking a united response
This meeting is open to all those involved in legally aided prison law work – solicitors, barristers, caseworkers, whether or not you are a member of APL (though you might think about joining if you are not!).
